Ip Man 2 is a 2009 Hong Kong martial arts biographical film based on the life of Ip Man who was Bruce Lee's mentor, directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong. This post is about the much talked-about Ip Man sequel released in December 2013. The movie tells the story of how Ip Man rose to prominence in Hong Kong during 1950s when he takes up his late brother's cause and faces off against local gangsters attempting to seize control of the city. It also focuses on how he married his way across borders to provide a better life for Fung Shui masters everywhere. "Ip Man 2" was directed by Wilson Yip, and it stars Donnie Yen in the title role with martial artists Mike Tyson, Sammo Hung and Vincent Zhao in pivotal roles. Yen reportedly trained for the film in Thailand. The film was a hit in Hong Kong and a moderate success elsewhere. An Ip Man 3 is currently being planned by Wilson Yip's production company.[1] In July 2010, Donnie Yen announced he would reprise his role as Ip Man in a sequel to "Ip Man".[2] In August 2010, Producer Raymond Wong revealed that he had acquired rights from Bruce Lee's daughter, Shannon Lee, to make an Ip Man movie. The film would be based on a script written by Hong Kong actor and director Wong Jing, who also wrote the lyrics for Ip Man's theme song. The film is based on the life and times of Wing Chun master Fung Yu-Lam. It was intended to be a box office success in the way that "The Karate Kid" was, and its release was anticipated by the Hong Kong media that it would break all box-office records. In fact, "Ip Man 2" became one of Hong Kong's highest grossing movies of all time making over HK$20 million in its first week, winning almost every Hong Kong Film Award for Excellence including Best Action Film and Best Director for Yip. It also went on to win a trophy at the 43rd Mainichi Film Awards for Best Action Choreography by Suen Siang Yin. "Ip Man 2" was released in Hong Kong on December 17, 2013 and Malaysia on April 9, 2014. The film was released in North America on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on November 3, 2014 by Well Go USA. Donnie Yen's performance as Ip Man drew much acclaim from the media, but not all critics were impressed. Many critics called his performance "underwhelming". "The Atlantic Monthly" named him "the best lacking martial arts icon of the 21st century." A pugilist himself, he is also adept at physical comedy and emotional timing.
