Rockefeller and I am a resident in the Dental Department at the University Hospital of Denton, Texas in the United States. That’s where I was hired. I joined this University Hospital, in my training program, precisely on December 31st, 2012. It seems that on this particular day the computer had some unfortunate technical problems which prevented Dr. Grassey who was one of my colleagues from completing his hearing test hearing test for the month of December, 2012. As a result he was unable to start his exam preparation and hence we were left with no doctor for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. The next day, the hospital administrator decided that we should work the remaining two hours of the shift and later fill in his two-hour shift with another doctor who was to arrive at 9 P.M. Apparently, it was never considered that we should just stop working and go home. Apparently, it was never considered that we should just stop working and go home, because there were other doctors on call and besides we had a replacement scheduled for New Year’s Day and so there was no reason for us to take a break. I wasn’t very concerned about getting paid for those two hours – but I really wanted to leave so I could celebrate the new year with my girlfriend. Unfortunately, neither my boss Dr. Grassey nor the administrator could see that I was busy preparing for my New Year’s Eve party, so they stayed at the hospital until New Year’s Day. The next day, because Dr. Grassey and the administrator didn’t show up until after 9 P.M., I assumed that they were celebrating with each other but instead of leaving, they decided to work the final two hours of their shift together. Apparently, this practice is not unheard of in universities and hospitals around North Texas because on December 30th 2012, just one day before I was fired for working too slowly, Dr. Grassey had worked until 5 P.M. and the administrator, Dr. John Eberhard, also worked until 5 P.M. on January 1st 2013 and then they both returned to work again at 9:00 P.M.. Somehow this behavior seems to be tolerated and even expected by the hospital administration and I guess one day I will start admiring those two doctors as well – one day when I become a member of their club. cfa1e77820
